Koa Wood Characteristics
USES: Koa is used in ukuleles, guitars, architectural millwork, decorative boxes and gun stocks
ORIGINS: Hawaiian Islands
BOTANICAL NAME: "Acacia koa"
COLOR DETAILS: Reddish to dark brown heartwood, creamy white sapwood. Rings of brown and black delineate growth rings. Every board is unique!
WORKABILITY: Machines well, finishes to a high luster. Can blunt blades. Takes nails and screws well, but has variable gluing properties.
DURABILITY: Koa wood is resistant to insect and fungal attack, but is extremely resistant to use of preservative treatments.
