Koa Lumber (Acacia Koa) Select & Better Grading Rules & Information
Minimum Yield: 83 1/3% Clear on the best face
Distribution: Hawaiian Islands
General Description: The heartwood is reddish to dark brown with regular dark brown zones marking the growth rings showing as black lines on longitudinal surfaces.
Mechanical properties: The material has medium bending strength and stiffness, high crushing strength and good resistance to shock loads.
Working properties: Works fairly easily with both hand and machine tools, but for end grain working the cutting edges must be kept sharp as the material has a moderate blunting effect. The wood takes nails and screws well, but gluing properties may be variable. Provides an excellent finish.
Durability: The wood is durable, resistant to insect and fungal attack; extremely resistant to preservative treatment.
Uses: The World-Famous Hawaiian ukuleles are made from Koa. It is also used for high-end custom cabinetry and fine furniture, gunstocks, and high end interior millwork.
