Butternut Wood Characteristics
USES: Butternut wood is used for a carving wood, furniture, and millwork.
ORIGINS: Eastern North America and Central U.S., especially the Northeast and North Central U.S.
BOTANICAL NAMES: "Juglans cinerea"
OTHER COMMON NAMES: White Walnut, Oilnut
COLOR DETAILS: Pale brown heartwood, the sapwood is lighter shade of the heartwood.
WORKABILITY: Soft, machines easily. Finishes well.

Butternut is nicknamed white walnut due to it's appearance as well as it's being a member of the same botanical classification "Juglans" that black walnut belongs to. Butternut lumber is graded under the same rules as walnut lumber.
