Soft Maple Wood Characteristics

USES: Soft Maple wood is a used in a wide variety of applications including cabinets, furniture, stair parts, mouldings and millwork

ORIGINS: Throughout Northern and Eastern US and to a lesser extent, the West Coast known as Big Leaf or PC Maple  

BOTANICAL NAME: "Acer rubrum, Acer saccharinum". 

OTHER COMMON NAMES: Red maple, silver maple, box elder

COLOR DETAILS: Soft maple sapwood is grayish white with occasional darker pith flecks.  Heartwood is light to dark reddish brown.

SPECIAL PROPERTIES: Soft Maple is about often used as a substitute for Hard Maple (25% softer than Hard Maple) 

Working Properties:  Soft Maple wood machines well, takes an excellent finish, glues, screws and nails reasonably well.

Soft Maple Lumber for Sale 

Wood Vendors supplies only the finest Soft Maple Lumber from select hardwood mills in the North-Eastern U.S.  When buying soft maple wood it is important to consider both the color and grade of the lumber.  Color is the percentage of white sapwood.  For instance 1+2 white is graded for white cuttings on the face and edges with at least 50% white on the reverse face.  The clearest standard grade (FAS, Select, Prime) in soft maple lumber calls for a minimum of 83 1/3% clear face cuttings, while #1 common requires at least 66 2/3% clear face cuttings.
